1. What is CY?

CY (Container Yard) refers to the container yard in foreign trade terminology. In some places, it is also called a terminal station. For ocean freight container exports, the function of the container yard is to gather all the containers from export customers at a designated place (regardless of whether customs clearance has been completed). After the cutoff time, the containers are then loaded onto the ship (at this point, they must have already cleared customs).

In other words, the container yard is a unified gathering place for containers before they are cleared and loaded onto the ship. Containers at the yard are waiting for customs clearance, which helps facilitate the management of shipping companies and customs.

2. What are CY/F0, CY/CY, CY/L0?

  1. CY/CY
CY/CY refers to the container yard to container yard method. The carrier receives the full container load (FCL) at the loading port container yard and is responsible for transporting it to the unloading port container yard, where the full container will be delivered to the consignee.
  2. CY/FO
CY/FO (Free Out) means that the carrier receives the full container load at the loading port container yard and is responsible for transporting it to the unloading port, but the carrier does not handle the unloading.
  3. CY/L0
CY/L0 (Line Out) means that the carrier receives the full container load at the loading port container yard and is responsible for transporting it to the unloading port, where the carrier is also responsible for unloading the container.
  4. CY/TACKLE
CY/TACKLE means that the carrier receives the full container load at the loading port container yard and is responsible for transporting it to the unloading port. However, this term refers to the carrier’s responsibility for loading/unloading operations using tackle (special lifting or handling equipment).
  5. CY/HOOK
CY/HOOK means that the carrier receives the full container load (FCL) at the loading port container yard and is responsible for transporting it to the unloading port for unloading. Once the cargo is lifted off by the crane, the service ends.

CY-CFS vs. CY-CY: Key Differences

It is important to note that CY-CFS and CY-CY are different, mainly in terms of the handover location, handover method, and the number of consignees involved. The specific differences are as follows:

  1. Different Handover Locations
    • CFS stands for Container Freight Station. The handover location is the container freight station.
    • CY stands for Container Yard. The handover location is the container yard at the port.
  2. Different Handover Methods
    • CY-CFS handover method is FCL-LCL (Full Container Load to Less-than-Container Load), which means the goods are transferred from the container yard to the container freight station. The carrier receives the sealed full container load at the loading port container yard, transports it by sea to the destination port, and then the container is unloaded and broken down at the CFS to be distributed among the consignees.
