According to overseas media reports, maritime safety technology companies Eyesea and EVI are promoting an artificial intelligence–based system designed to detect and report containers that fall overboard from container ships.

The system uses standard onboard ship cameras to monitor container stacks and automatically identify container loss incidents. The technology has completed development and testing in simulated environments and is now preparing for real-world trials on operational vessels.

Once an incident is detected, relevant data will be immediately transmitted to the registered shipowner, flag state, and relevant authorities.

This functionality also supports the upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandatory container loss reporting requirements, which require timely reporting of the location, number, and cargo information of lost containers, particularly in cases involving dangerous goods.

The CEO of EVI Safety Technology stated that applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to the maritime sector helps address an environmental and safety issue that has been overlooked for decades.

In addition to regulatory compliance, real-time monitoring and automated reporting can also help solve a long-standing industry problem: container loss incidents are often not detected in time, or reports are delayed, preventing early warnings to other vessels.
