According to Reuters, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated on May 26 that the U.S. government will seek public comments on which Chinese goods may be eligible for lower tariffs.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations, Greer said that he had personally reviewed and revised the relevant notice, which would set the direction for the next steps to be taken by the U.S. side. He noted that the first step would be to collect public feedback.

Greer emphasized that the objective is to facilitate tariff reductions on at least USD 30 billion worth of “non-sensitive goods” traded between China and the United States. He also added that the Office of the United States Trade Representative is expected to publish a notice in the Federal Register soon to formally request public comments.

This move indicates that the United States is proactively considering targeted tariff reductions and seeking public input. However, it does not represent a comprehensive removal of tariffs. Instead, the process is expected to focus on specific categories of goods that may qualify for reduced tariff treatment.

The development is related to the recent trade discussions following President Trump’s visit to China. Both sides have reportedly agreed to establish a joint trade committee and have preliminarily identified approximately USD 30 billion worth of non-strategic goods for which tariffs may be reduced or removed.

Such public comment procedures are common in U.S. trade policy. Similar processes have previously been used for Section 301 tariff exclusion lists, allowing industries, companies, and the public to submit feedback before final decisions are made.

At present, the specific notice details and product scope have not yet been released. Further information is expected to be published soon through the official USTR website or the Federal Register.
