Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping involves combining multiple shippers’ cargo onto a single trailer, rather than dedicating an entire truck to one company’s freight. LTL is a good option for shipments between one and six pallets or under 14 linear feet, as it maximizes available cargo space on each truck by consolidating smaller loads. This makes shipping easier for small businesses.

In contrast, full truckload (FTL) shipping occupies an entire truck, or close to it, with one company’s cargo. When you ship FTL, you have exclusive use and control of the truck’s full capacity, even if your goods don’t completely fill it up. Unlike LTL, your freight won’t ever be co-loaded with other companies’ products. Renting an FTL truck ensures your cargo has dedicated space without needing to share with other shipments.
