During the pandemic, shipping companies did booming business and made huge profits.

Everyone is guessing how much compensation these shipping CEOs are getting.

The disclosure of CEO compensation from the previous year is usually submitted in late spring.

In 2022, the average compensation of the top 11 deep-sea shipping chief executive officers who disclosed data was $4.7 million,

up 19% from 2021, with an average of 50% in cash and 50% in stock.

Let’s look at some familiar shipping companies:

AP Moller-Maersk, Soren Skou, had an annual salary last year of 43.605 million Danish kroner, around $6.162 million.

Skou retired at the end of 2022 after presiding over Maersk’s most profitable year in history.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, had total compensation last year of 2.994 million euros, around $3.155 million.

Zim, CEO Eli Glickman, last year’s salary was $6.005 million.

Matson, Matt Cox, $6.028 million, only $134,000 less than Maersk’s CEO Soren Skou.

Although Matson’s fleet is much smaller than Hapag-Lloyd’s and Zim’s, its CEO’s compensation surpassed these two “giants”.

In addition, among the 11 shipping companies that have disclosed CEO compensation,

the highest paid is Gary Vogel, CEO of midsize dry bulk ship operator Eagle Bulk, with total compensation reaching $7.004 million.

The second highest is David Grzebinski, CEO of Kirby Corporation, the largest U.S. inland tank barge operator.
