Definition of Shipping Space Release:
Also known as space confirmation or allocation of space, this occurs when the shipping line reviews the booking request from the freight forwarder/shipper (covering price, sailing schedule, etc.) and officially assigns vessel space to the cargo. Note: This only confirms there is space onboard — it does not mean containers have been released yet.
Definition of Container Release:
After space is confirmed, the shipping line issues a document (commonly referred to in South China as S/O – Shipping Order) allowing the freight forwarder/shipper to pick up empty containers.
Steps: With this release document → collect empty container at depot → load cargo → return full container.

III. Common Questions & Quick Reference
-
Is space release = container release?
No. Space release only guarantees vessel space. Container release depends on actual equipment availability. -
Can shipper assign container number/seal number?
Some carriers allow this for documentation purposes. -
Why does S/O ETD keep changing?
Sailing schedules change. Final ETD is based on the latest release info. -
What if booking is cancelled or rolled after stuffing?
Usually due to overbooking; the carrier may cancel unstuffed space or roll containers to the next vessel. -
Why is space not released after booking?
Possible reasons: freight not confirmed, incomplete booking details, or tight capacity. -
What if booking or space info changes?
Must update carrier immediately, especially for sensitive cargo or LCL volume/weight changes. -
Time gap between space release and container release?
Typically 1–3 days, but varies by route, carrier, and market conditions. In special cases, delays may occur.
