1. Definition
- Reefer Container (RF)
A refrigerated container that requires a power supply to maintain temperature.
Common sizes: 20RF / 40RF.
- NOR (Non-Operating Reefer)
A reefer container used without turning on the cooling unit, functioning as a dry container.
40NOR is often used to replace 40GP.
2. Applications
- RF (Reefer)
Used for products that require temperature control, preservation, or heating:
food, plants, animals, pharmaceuticals, etc.
Examples: cherries, seafood from South America, etc.
- NOR
Used as a cheaper alternative to 40GP.
Loading capacity: approx. 55–65 CBM.
Example: Many seafood exports from South America to China use reefers. To return empty equipment efficiently, carriers encourage using 40NOR for shipments back to South America, so they can be reused as active reefers again.
3. Important Notes
① Quotation
- RF: Provide exact shipping date, cargo weight, product name, temperature range, and whether vents need to be open.
- NOR: Quoted the same way as general dry containers.
- Most carriers offer reefer services; 40NOR is widely available with MSK.
- NOR rates are usually cheaper than 40GP / 40HQ, with more volume than 40GP — popular for general cargo and textiles.
② Booking
- RF: Provide accurate shipping date, weight, description, temperature range, and vent status.
- NOR: Booked like a dry container; not recommended for machinery (many NOR units lack lashing points).
- Once reefer parameters are submitted, any changes may require re-confirming freight and space.
- Reefer equipment availability must be checked in advance.
Recommended: book at least 2 weeks before ETD to allow for empty reefer positioning.
③ Loading & Pickup
- RF: Very short free time and free demurrage (sometimes only 2–3 days). Trailers need power supply, which incurs extra fees.
- NOR: Previously used for refrigerated cargo.
Check for proper ventilation and odors if your cargo is sensitive to smell.Free time is usually similar to standard dry containers per your forwarder’s contract.
④ Insurance
- RF: Insurance is highly recommended to avoid loss from temperature or equipment failure.
- NOR: Based on customer request.
⑤ Bill of Lading
- RF: Arrange B/L release promptly to avoid high demurrage/detention at destination.
Free time at the port is usually only around 3 days, shorter than standard containers.
