In the early hours of June 21, the Oman Maritime Security Center issued a statement reporting the sinking of a container ship in the Arabian Sea near the country’s waters. The vessel, flying the flag of Comoros and measuring 118 meters in length, sank approximately 20 nautical miles southeast of Salalah Port—close to disputed waters in the Arabian Sea.
Fortunately, all 20 crew members were successfully rescued by a nearby commercial vessel, Gulf Barakah, with no casualties reported.
While the cause of the sinking has yet to be officially confirmed—whether due to mechanical failure, human error, or a possible attack—its timing during ongoing regional tensions, particularly the Israel-Iran conflict, has sparked international speculation.
This incident comes amid rising concerns over maritime security in the region, especially around key chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, as geopolitical tensions continue to escalate.
